What to be when I grow up, and how to get there?

Well, I need help. Let’s start from the beginning…

Everyone expects me to have my life in order and it is not. I have no one to turn to for advice.

I am most passionate about art. I have a very visual mind, I love hands on activities, I work and play well with others :) , I love to write, I love to read and research projects, I have excellent public speaking skills.

The thing is, I went to college for one semester. I moved back home thinking I was going to become a Cosmetologist. When those plans fell through, I am stuck where I am now. Because I failed college algebra (even though I made b’s in all my other classes) my HOPE scholarship (which pays for tuition in georgia) has been taken away because I never got to finish 30 credit hours to pull up my GPA. This leaves me with no hope, literally. I have a part time job, and I moved back in with my parents. I HATE IT. I am 19 and I feel like I have no where to go. I’m indecisive careerwise because I am interested in so many different things.

I was recently thinking about becoming an art teacher, something I have been passionate about since freshman year in high school. I never gave art a chance and i’m very good at it. I took AP art senior year.

I know this has been a long explanation. Ultimately, I need advice on how to move forward in my life, what careers survey says I would be good at :) and how to make a plan. I can’t stand being in this rut anymore, I am wasting my mind away. I am very driven, I just need somewhere to start.

HELP!! Thanks for reading and answering :)

  1. First you are not really wasting your time. Keep in action by staying driven. Things will happen. Get 3 possibilities on your table, choose one and go for it.

  2. Go to a college you have access to/can get enrolled in (like a community college maybe) and talk to the Financial Aid people. You can talk scholarships, loans, Pell grants, etc. Based on how that goes, you’ll be able to determine what you can afford to enroll in and how much time you’ll have to spend working for money. Then, knowing at what speed you can go through school, go talk to the academic advisor. They’ll probably suggest to you what sort of degree you need to teach art. Then they’ll talk about what classes you’ll need to take to get you there. You might have to take a bunch of GEs and then transfer to a university and do the art teaching degree program. Things might go slow, but you can get there eventually.

Basically, just move forward. Talking to the college peoples will help you.
