Definitely not a good idea, unless you are trying to evade taxes. For the reasons you note, you get no proof of employment or income when you want to obtain credit or a rental.
By law, employers MUST provide a 1099-MISC tax form at the end of the year if they paid more than $600.
1) Yes you are obligated to show proof if the land lord asks. If you do not want to show proof, then you obviously do not want to live there.
2) Hopefully your boyfriend is not a tax cheat and reports him income on his income tax returns. If he does not AT LEAST do that, then you cannot use his income at all. You cannot on one hand have undocumented income, then turn right around and try to use that to your advantage.
Do your boyfriend have a bank account? If he has a bank account and can prove deposits, some landlords will accept this as proof that he earns some type of income.
Without any proof of income the landlord would be amiss of his duties if he allowed your boyfriend and you to sign a lease or month to month rent knowing that your boyfriend can not actually prove that he is capable of paying the monthly rent.
Without proof of income you and your boyfriend might be out of luck or need to have a co-signer to assist you with the renting of an apartment.
I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.
“FIGHT ON”
Do you mean your boyfriend is paid off the books? If so, his income wouldn’t count. You can only count verifiable income that’s reported to the IRS. If he’s not paid off the books, he should have some kind of statement for each check, and a tax statement for the entire year, a W-2.

Yes you must provide some kind of proof of income or they will not rent to you. They are not going to rent to someone that cannot show they have the means to pay the rent. Most landlords will take this years tax return.
He should have 1099’s, but even if he doesn’t he can just show him income tax return.
